Nipple Correction Surgery: Inverted Nipple & Nipple Reduction

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, or even genetics can affect the shape and position of your nipples. These changes may result in nipples that appear inverted, enlarged, or asymmetrical.

A nipple correction surgery can help improve their appearance and restore balance to your breasts. The procedure may reposition inverted nipples to bring them outward or reduce the nipple or areola to achieve a better size and shape.

Benefits of a Nipple Correction Surgery

Nipple correction surgery offers both functional and aesthetic benefits, helping patients feel more comfortable. These include:

  • Improved appearance: It enhances the overall look of the breasts by bringing inverted nipples outward, reducing their size, or reducing the areola.
  • It’s quick: Most procedures take less than an hour, depending on the type of correction needed. Patients also return home the same day, making it ideal for those with busy schedules.
  • Fast recovery: The nipple correction procedure is minimally invasive. As such, most patients only experience mild discomfort and can return to normal activities within a few days.
  • Personalized results: Dr. Jiles will tailor each procedure to address your unique needs. This ensures the results look natural by complementing the structure of your breasts.
  • Lasting outcome: Once corrected, the nipples can maintain their new shape and position for many years, unless significant changes occur due to pregnancy or aging.
  • Minimal scarring: Dr. Jiles will make small incisions in the natural creases of the breast to reduce visible scarring. This ensures the final result looks natural, with little to no trace of surgery.
  • Enhanced comfort: For patients with enlarged or protruding nipples, the surgery can reduce irritation or discomfort caused by friction with clothing, making them feel more comfortable.
  • Boosts confidence and self-esteem: Inverted nipples can make your breasts appear less perky. This can affect your confidence and make you feel self-conscious about the types of clothing you wear, such as swimsuits or fitted tops. An inverted nipple surgery can help boost your confidence by improving the shape and position of the nipples, giving your breasts a more youthful appearance. You can wear any clothing you wish and appear in social events without doubting your looks.

Who Is the Right Candidate for a Nipple Correction Surgery?

The nipple correction procedure is ideal for anyone with inverted, enlarged, or elongated nipples that affect the overall balance of the breasts. It is also suitable for individuals who experience physical discomfort, such as irritation from clothing due to nipple size.

Candidates should be in good health to lower the risk of complications and allow the body to heal properly after surgery. They should also have realistic expectations and not be currently pregnant or breastfeeding since hormonal changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding can alter the nipples and areolas, affecting the outcome of the surgery. Recovery from surgery may also interfere with breastfeeding, so it is best to consider an inverted nipple correction surgery once you wean your baby.

Additionally, the candidate should be at least 18 years old since the breasts are usually fully developed at this age. Giving the breasts time to reach their final size and shape before making any surgical changes allows us to achieve long-lasting results.

What to Expect During Inverted Nipple Repair & Nipple Reduction

Every patient’s plan is personalized, but the overall journey follows a clear path. Below, you’ll find what typically happens before surgery, during the procedure, and in the early healing period. We’ll highlight common milestones, expected sensations, and routine follow-ups.

Before Nipple Correction Surgery

Dr. Jiles will listen to your concerns, review your medical history, and examine your nipples to determine the best treatment approach for your needs.

She may recommend quitting smoking and drinking for at least 6 weeks, and temporarily stopping certain medications or supplements that could affect healing.

She will also provide personalized pre-operative instructions to ensure your body is in the best condition for surgery.

During Nipple Correction Surgery

Nipple correction is usually performed as an in-office or outpatient procedure. Dr Jiles will administer local anesthesia to numb the area and ensure you are comfortable.

She will then mark the incision areas and make small incisions along the natural creases of the nipple or areola to keep scarring minimal. Depending on your need, she may release tight tissue to correct inverted nipples, reduce excess nipple projection by removing a small portion of tissue, or reshape the areola by removing excess skin.

After Nipple Correction Surgery

Dr. Jiles will close the incisions with fine sutures, and you’ll be monitored briefly before heading home.

Most patients experience mild pain and discomfort once the anesthesia wears off. We will manage this using painkillers and antibiotics. You may also apply cold compressions to control swelling and pain.

Most patients resume light daily activities within 2 to 3 days. However, strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or activities that put pressure on the chest should be avoided for about 2 weeks to allow proper healing.

Final results will appear after about 3 months, once the tissues have fully settled into their new shape. Moreover, any scars will gradually fade and disappear within 12 months.

Related Breast Surgery Procedures

A nipple correction surgery can be performed as a stand-alone procedure to focus on improving the shape or symmetry of the nipples, or as part of a more comprehensive breast procedure to enhance balance and proportion. So, depending on your goals, Dr. Jiles may recommend complementary treatments to achieve the best results. These may include:

Breast Lift: Raises and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin and tightening surrounding tissue. It is often performed alongside an inverted nipple treatment to enhance the overall aesthetic of the breasts.

Breast Augmentation: The procedure enhances the volume and shape of the breasts using implants or fat transfer.

Dr. Jiles will customize the implants according to your desired size and body proportions. For fat transfer, she will harvest from areas such as the abdomen, then purify it before injecting it into the breasts.

Thereafter, she may adjust the nipples or areolas to ensure a natural and balanced appearance.

Breast Reduction: Reduces the size of the breasts by removing excess breast tissue. This will ensure they are comfortable and proportionate. Nipple correction surgery may be included to resize or reposition the nipples and areolas to match the shape of the breasts.
