Arm Lift (Brachioplasty) with Dr. Jiles

An arm lift is a body contouring cosmetic surgery that enhances the appearance of the upper arms by removing excess skin between the underarm and elbow.

During the surgery, Dr. Jiles will remove the extra skin and contour the upper arm for a slimmer, more defined look. Because an arm lift is a more advanced cosmetic procedure, it generally takes additional time in the operating room and requires a longer recovery period compared to less invasive treatments.

This healing process allows the body to adapt to the newly sculpted contours, and patients are typically rewarded with arms that appear smoother, tighter, and more youthful. The improvements can be dramatic, helping many people feel more confident wearing short sleeves or form-fitting clothing.

Am I a Good Candidate for an Arm Lift?

An arm lift may be a good option if you have loose skin on your upper arms and want a more sculpted appearance. It’s often recommended for older patients and/or those who have lost a significant amount of weight and are left with sagging skin.

You should also have good health and stable weight and stop smoking 6 weeks before and after surgery to promote proper healing. Most importantly, you should have realistic expectations and be committed to following your post-surgery care instructions.

Recovery and Risks Associated With a Brachioplasty

After a brachioplasty, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort during the first week. Your arm lift surgeon, Dr. Jiles, will prescribe painkillers and antibiotics to reduce pain and prevent infection in the treated area. She may also remove non-dissolvable stitches 1 to 2 weeks after your procedure.

Most patients need about 2 weeks of rest and reduced activity. During this time, it’s recommended to avoid strenuous activities and raising your arms above shoulder level. After 12 weeks, you can start lifting heavy objects and engaging in more strenuous workouts.

Most swelling will gradually diminish after 2 to 3 weeks, and you’ll start to notice improved contours of your upper arms. Full healing may take 6 (or more) months when the majority of residual swelling resolves.

In rare cases, some patients experience poor wound healing, unfavorable scarring, asymmetrical results, numbness, bleeding, anesthesia-related complications, and fluid buildup. Dr. Jiles will take every precaution to minimize these risks and will provide you with detailed instructions to follow before and after your procedure to help promote a smooth recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions on Arm Lifts in Sarasota & Tampa

How Long Do Results From an Arm Lift Last?

The results of a brachioplasty procedure can last several years, especially if you maintain a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle and follow post-op care.

However, as your body continues to age, the skin will naturally lose some of its elasticity, and slight sagging may return. In this case, you may choose to undergo touch-up procedures to keep your arms sculpted and youthful for more years.

Will I Have Visible Scars After an Arm Lift?

No. Dr. Jiles will make incisions on the underside of the upper arm, extending from the underarm toward the elbow. This placement helps keep the scar as discreet as possible, making it less visible when your arms are resting at your sides.

She will also provide instructions on how to care for your wound to help it heal smoothly. Over time, the scar will fade and become less noticeable.

Are There Non-Surgical Alternatives to an Arm Lift?

Yes. Some non-surgical alternatives to an arm lift include Renuvion, BodyTite, and ultrasound therapy. These options can help improve mildly loose skin, but they aren’t as dramatic or long-lasting as a body contouring surgery. They can’t remove excess skin or significantly reduce large amounts of fatty tissue.

What Should I Do to Prepare for My Arm Lift Procedure?

Avoid or limit the use of blood thinners and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, as they increase your risk of bleeding during or after your brachioplasty procedure. It’s also important to quit smoking at least 6 weeks before and after your surgery. Smoking can impair circulation and slow the healing process.

Before your procedure, arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home afterward and stay with you during the first 24 hours. Anesthesia can affect your judgment and ability to react quickly, and having someone there to assist you can help avoid accidents.

Additionally, you should prepare a comfortable space at home where you can rest and heal. That might include pillows to keep your arms elevated, comfortable clothing that’s easy to put on and take off, and all your medications and supplies within reach.

Most importantly, stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet rich in nutrients, and get plenty of rest to aid in recovery.

Do I Need to Lose Weight Before Having an Arm Lift?

You should be close to your ideal weight and maintain it for 6 months before undergoing an arm lift. This means if you want to lose weight, make sure you do so at least 7 months before the procedure.

Large fluctuations in weight after your body contouring surgery can cause your skin to stretch again or create new areas of sagging.
